Oshi no Ko: The Dark Side of the Idol Industry – Complete Guide 2026

Oshi no Ko arrived in 2020 with one of the most shocking opening chapters in recent manga history — and immediately established itself as something genuinely unlike anything else being published. Created by Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari (Scum's Wish), it is a story that uses the sparkle and artifice of Japan's idol industry as the setting for a dark, complex exploration of performance, identity, revenge, and what it costs to make entertainment.

The Setup: Reincarnation and Revenge

The story begins with Goro, a country doctor who is the devoted fan (oshi) of Ai Hoshino — a young idol with an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel, in the moment she looks at them, that she loves them alone. Through a series of extraordinary circumstances, Goro dies and is reincarnated as Ai's son, Aquamarine Hoshino — Aqua. His twin sister is Ruby.

When tragedy strikes early in their lives, Aqua becomes consumed by a desire for revenge — and decides to enter the entertainment industry to find the person responsible, willing to use every dishonest, manipulative technique the industry itself runs on.

Ai Hoshino: The Idol Who Lied About Everything

Ai is one of the most complex idol characters in any medium. Her defining characteristic — and the source of her extraordinary stage presence — is that she lies constantly. She lies to her fans, to her colleagues, to her children. But the manga slowly reveals that her relationship with lying is more tragic than cynical: she lies because she has never known what genuine love feels like, and performing love is the only thing she knows how to do.

Her star burns briefly and brilliantly in the story, and her absence haunts everything that follows.

Ruby: The Dreamer

Where Aqua is consumed by darkness and revenge, Ruby — also a reincarnated person, this time a terminally ill girl who had worshipped Ai — throws herself into the idol world with genuine joy and passion. She wants to become an idol because she loved idols, not because she wants to manipulate anyone. Her brightness is the emotional counterweight to Aqua's darkness, and her own journey toward understanding what it means to perform authentically is one of the series' most rewarding arcs.

The Entertainment Industry as a Mirror

Oshi no Ko is at its most interesting when it examines the mechanics of the entertainment industry — how reality TV works, how idol management controls its talent, how social media shapes public perception, how the line between performance and authenticity gets blurred until it disappears. Its portrayal of these systems is sharp, specific, and occasionally genuinely disturbing.

The Anime

The anime adaptation premiered in 2023 with a 90-minute opening episode that became one of the most-watched anime premieres in recent memory. The ending theme — YOASOBI's "Idol" — became a massive global hit, introducing Oshi no Ko to audiences who might never have found it otherwise.
