How to Use Claude Code: The Workflows That Actually Matter

Launching Claude Code takes a single command. Using it well — getting results that justify the tokens and beat what you would get in Cursor — takes understanding where it excels and how to direct it. This guide covers both.

The Mental Model First

Cursor for the 90% of daily coding. Claude Code for the 10% of heavy tasks. If you reach for Claude Code on a quick autocomplete, you are wasting its strengths and your budget. If you reach for Cursor on a twelve-file refactor, you will spend the afternoon reconciling patches. Knowing which task is which is the entire skill.

The Six Workflows Where Claude Code Wins

Large-scale refactoring. When a change touches many files and has to stay coherent, Claude Code reads the whole codebase before acting. Specify the goal, the constraint, what to preserve and what to exclude.

Architecture analysis. Full-codebase context makes it genuinely useful for understanding how a system fits together — tracing data flow, finding patterns, mapping relationships across files.

Feature generation. A complete feature spanning middleware, configuration, storage and tests, built as a coherent whole from one long instruction.

Complex debugging. Paste a full error and ask it to find the root cause across the codebase rather than patch the symptom. It traces the actual cause.

Cross-file consistency. Renames and interface changes that ripple through dozens of files, kept consistent because it sees everything at once.

Test coverage. Tests written with knowledge of the actual implementation, not just the function signature.

How to Write Instructions

Use the five-part structure: objective (what to achieve), scope (which files), exclusions (what not to touch), style (conventions), verification (how to confirm). A vague instruction like "fix the auth" produces drift. A structured one produces a clean result.

Working in Sessions

Within a session, Claude Code remembers everything. Chain related tasks rather than starting fresh each time — "now write tests for that", "now update the docs" — and each builds on full context. Start a new session only when you switch to unrelated work.

Keeping Costs Down

Scope instructions to specific files when possible, use the compact command in long sessions, and reserve Claude Code for tasks that genuinely need it. The cost scales with how much of the codebase it reads and how many iterations a task takes.
