Lighting and Color Grade Language That Actually Changes Your AI Shots
If you change one thing in a mediocre AI video prompt, change the light. Lighting and grade are the two biggest levers on atmosphere — bigger than subject, bigger than setting.
Here's the vocabulary that actually works.
Lighting: the mood engine
- Golden hour — warm, low, forgiving; instant beauty.
- Neon glow — saturated, urban, nocturnal; the cyberpunk default.
- Candlelight — intimate, flickering, warm and small.
- Soft overcast — even, gentle, contemplative.
- Harsh noon sun — hard shadows, high contrast, uncomfortable on purpose.
- Moonlight — cool, silver; night that reads as night.
- Volumetric fog beams — god rays, visible atmosphere, depth.
Color grade: the "cinema" signal
- Teal and orange — the modern blockbuster look.
- Kodak film grain — analog warmth and texture.
- Bleach bypass — desaturated, gritty, harsh.
- Technicolor — hyper-saturated, vivid, classic.
- Black-and-white noir — instant gravity.
- Muted pastel — soft, dreamy, melancholy.
- Cyberpunk palette — neon darks, electric accents.

Pair light and grade on purpose
The magic is in the combination. Neon glow + cyberpunk palette is redundant — both push the same way. Neon glow + Kodak film grain is interesting — the grain softens the electric light into something human. Contrast between lighting and grade is often where the most distinctive shots live.
Subject tells the model what to show.
Light and grade tell it how to feel.
Build an ear for it
You learn this by seeing the words attached to real shots — then swapping light and grade and watching the prompt change.
