Professional Error Handling for AI Agent Workflows
Beginners build workflows that work. Professionals build workflows that work, fail gracefully, recover automatically and notify a human when they cannot. Here is the complete error handling stack.
The difference between an AI agent workflow that breaks silently and one that runs reliably for months without intervention is almost entirely about error handling. Not the AI model. Not the prompt quality. Error handling.
The Three Types of Workflow Errors
Type 1 — Transient errors are temporary failures: network timeouts, API rate limits (429 errors), external service outages. The operation would succeed if tried again in 30-60 seconds. These should be handled with automatic retry with exponential backoff — never require human intervention for a transient error.
Type 2 — Logic errors are caused by unexpected input: an email in an unexpected language, a PDF that is actually an image, a JSON payload with a missing required field. These require logging the specific input that caused the failure, notifying a human with enough context to understand what went wrong, and continuing to process other items if possible.
Type 3 — System errors are critical failures: authentication expired, database connection lost, API key revoked. These require immediate human alert with full error details. Never retry automatically — these require human investigation.

Implementing Retry Logic in Make.com
In Make.com, add an error handler to every module that calls an external API. Set the handler type to "Resume" for transient errors with a delay — this implements automatic retry. Set the maximum number of retries to 3 with delays of 30, 60 and 120 seconds (exponential backoff). If all 3 retries fail, route to a Slack or email notification with the error details.
The Monitoring Dashboard
For any workflow running daily, build a Google Sheet monitoring dashboard. Log: timestamp, workflow name, status (SUCCESS/ERROR/WARNING), input summary, output summary, error message if any, and duration in seconds. Create a conditional formatting rule: red for ERROR rows. Check this sheet weekly — patterns in your error data reveal exactly which prompts or connections need improvement.
